We believe the value and benefits of iCan Shine programs are best summarized by our fans. We are grateful for the opportunity to serve others and are proud of the relationships developed through iCan Shine programs. Our fans talk and we listen… and we like what we hear.
It is a true honor and privilege to support this great group of parents and help bring the iCan Bike camp to Houston! After many failed attempts over several years of trying to teach my 10-year-old son, Pierce, to ride a bike, I found out about iCan Shine. With no local camp at the time in Memphis where we lived, I took time off work and drove him three hours each way to Nashville every day for a week. It required incredible time and effort, but he finished the week able to ride a bike independently and with ease! The life changing confidence it gave Pierce is what inspires me to give that same confidence to children with disabilities in the Houston area, where a bike camp is much needed. Excited to help pay it forward!
We spent years trying to teach our 9-year-old daughter to ride a bike, and we felt frustrated on her behalf. Despite the fact she had years of occupational therapy when she was young, her motor challenges were just too great. We had heard of the national program held in Katy years ago, so our family traveled to spend a week in San Antonio to participate in the iCan Bike location there. Many more families had traveled to participate also, one family from as far as Ohio. We were thrilled to see that by Day 5 of the program she was finally riding a bike on her own. Being able to ride a bike independently has made an unbelievable change in her confidence and self-esteem, afforded her more social opportunities with other children, and allowed her to spend more time in the great outdoors.
This program is in high demand in the Houston area, and I believe anyone who wants to participate should not have to add travel expenses to participate in this incredible program. I am thrilled to help bring this program back to the city of Houston with four enthusiastic parents for the Summer of 2023.
My wife and I meet at a triathlon, and riding has been a part of our lives. We are excited to help bring this program to Houston and have our Daughter learn to ride a bike confidently with her disabilities. We are thankful for so many parents and sponsors who help make this happen!
Years of physical and occupational therapy have helped our daughter overcome many obstacles, but the coordination and balance required to ride a bike are still among her struggles. I am inspired to help bring iCan Bike back to the Houston area to witness the transformation of these riders as they learn a skill that can bring life-long independence and joy. The parents, volunteers, and sponsors have the opportunity to be impacted right alongside them. I cannot wait to be along for the ride.
When my daughter Harper was born with a rare genetic disorder that resulted in epilepsy and autism, I worried about what that would mean for her future and independence. So much of her life has not come easily, so when I heard about this program I was a complete skeptic. Boy was I proven wrong - not only was Harper successful on 2 wheels, but the confidence that being able to ride a bike has given her is something you can’t replicate! For kids who struggle in so many areas of life, this has truly been a gift to see her shine! When she participated in 2019 I knew this organization was something I myself wanted to pour into- so when the buzz started up again to bring it back to Houston post-Covid I immediately wanted to help make it happen. With my team of 3 other special needs parents we look forward to seeing how many families in Houston can be impacted by learning to ride!
