What a great question! We have to write a check to the iCan Shine organization for $9,700 just to register our 1-week camp date so they can bring their fleet of special bikes and two staff members to Houston. Then, as the Host, we are also responsible for all other costs such as providing the hotel room(s) for a week, buying camp t-shirts, purchasing awards, printing marketing materials, providing staff lunches, and securing space for the camp itself. As you can see, the cost for camp quickly adds up to an estimated $15,000 each summer! The rider registration fees only cover a fraction of the total, so we depend on donations to keep going.
If you would like to make a donation to iCan Bike Houston to help cover these costs, please click here: https://icanshine.org/donate-to-specific-camp-location/ and click the iCan Bike - Houston, TX option from the Camp Location drop down menu.
Absolutely! Register to volunteer here.
Go to the "Sign Up" page by clicking the tab at the top of this page. This will open on Feb. 20 at 10am. Our registration fills up fast, so we encourage you to set a reminder to sign up right when it opens.
iCan Bike Houston will send notifications of session assignments or waitlist status by February 23 (or thereafter for registrations received later). Please know that session assignments are made based on rider size and ability to ensure we have proper equipment and volunteers to help them shine. You will have the opportunity to rank your top three session choices during registration. Session times are not necessarily first come-first serve, but we do try really hard to give you one of your preferred session times. The information on the registration form relating to diagnosis(es) and level of needs is really helpful as try to form sessions with a balance of riders.
You may request a refund by notifying us in writing at icanbikehouston@gmail.com that your rider is no longer able to participate. The $250 is refundable, minus a $50 registration fee, if your enrollment is canceled prior to May 1. Thereafter, you will receive a tax-deductible donation receipt if your registration is canceled. This policy is necessary to cover our program expenses.
Add an answe Riders are required to attend the same assigned session time every day, Monday through Friday. Please contact us at icanbikehouston@gmail.com before May 1 if you need to change your session time. We will try to accomodate if we can, but we cannot guarantee we will be able to make changes. Sessions are carefully designed to balance rider size and ability. We are not able to move a rider to a different session for just one day, as each session is full based on the allowable size of the facility for safety reasons.
